Thursday, a task force that supports the dredging of Georgetown's port met for the first time since voters turned down a referendum that would have added a one percent sales tax. The funding was set to speed up several expensive capital projects, including some of the millions of dollars it's expected to cost to dig out silt that has built up along the Georgetown port passageway.

The committee that's working on a plan to dredge the port of Georgetown now knows how much the project would cost and how long it would take to complete. The challenge for the task force now is to come up with the money to do it.

A task force looking for funds to pay for dredging the Port of Georgetown will meet on Monday to discuss what it would take to allow a private company to operate the port, instead of the South Carolina State Ports Authority which owns and operates the facility.
