'Doughnut holes' are pockets of areas surrounded by city property but are governed by Horry County. Because of state annexation laws the City of Myrtle Beach can't just bring an area in without resident approval. In all, there are nearly 50 doughnut holes within the city limits.

Friday May 9, 1980 marked the first day Confederate Memorial Day was observed in South Carolina. Since then men like Terry Carter have recognized the annual event by observing the 403 men from Horry County who served and died with the Confederate States of America.

In 2009, 1770 children died nationwide from abuse. On January 25, 2010, Tylashia Grant, 3, of Florence County died in what police say was a homicide case. Her aunt and cousin are charged in her death. Some SC lawmakers and child advocacy groups are now trying to raise greater awareness of the child abuse issue.
