After more than two inches of rainfall over a 48-hour period, fire officials say the Hornet Fire remains about 70 percent contained, having consumed 1,374 acres of woods near the Carolina Forest community. While the rain is a welcome relief to forestry crews, farmers and golf course supervisors who have been hit hard by a lingering drought, at least a few Grand Strand businesses do not look kindly on the rain.

The South Carolina Forestry Commission says it rained about one inch at its staging area for what they call the Hornet Fire. Now, crews are stuck with muddy conditions for fighting the fire.

State forestry crews were back at work Thursday on a woods fire that flared up Wednesday along Highway 31. Forestry officials it's fully contained now, but the fire got a little too close for comfort for some homeowners.
