PSA screening for prostate cancer: right or wrong?

So I see there's another new pronouncement from a health care panel discrediting the use of the PSA (prostate-specific antigen) test as a screening tool for prostate cancer. The United States Preventive Services Task Force now recommends that healthy men should not get the test, citing studies that show the health risks of treating non-aggressive tumors can be greater than the risk of death from prostate cancer.

Make September your month to get screened

Every month that comes along seems to have some kind of designation these days and September happens to be Prostate Cancer Awareness Month. Regular readers of this blog know that prostate cancer is something that I've been talking, thinking and writing about for quite awhile now.

Phone of the future is here. Where are those jetpacks?

I had one of those miracles of modern technology moments recently and it reminded me of a fun family experience I had when I was 7-years-old, while also leading me to wonder why this particular modern marvel took so long to get here.

A reflection on The Wall

It pains me a little to think that the Vietnam War still has the potential to divide us, that it seems we're still struggling with what it was all about, who were the heroes in that war and who were not. I guess it's because, as you look at the names on that wall, it's so tempting to ask why, when, at this stage, maybe it's better to just say thanks. You can do that in Myrtle Beach this week.

Raising awareness about prostate cancer

Let me begin by saying I don't begrudge breast advocates for the energy and attention they bring to their disease. On the contrary, I admire the way they do such a terrific job of raising awareness and money for their cause.

Just a little bit of bragging

In the fall of 1982, the University of Virginia had the number one college basketball team in the country, led by undoubtedly the best player in the country, a talented 7-foot-4-inch center named Ralph Sampson.

What now? New guidelines for prostate cancer screening

Just when you thought you had the whole screening for prostate cancer thing figured out, the American Cancer Society goes and changes the rules.

One year later...

Hard to believe this much time has passed, but November 7th marks one year since my prostate cancer diagnosis.

Surgery day

In this high-tech age, why can't some genius out there invent a better hospital gown?

The surgery

It's Thursday evening as I write this, with surgery scheduled for early tomorrow (Friday) morning. I'm more optimistic now than ever. I'll explain why later.

The joys of a liquid diet

It's the day before surgery and I'm on a liquids-only diet, or as the doctor's instructions so helpfully point out, "anything that you can see through."

Cancer: It can happen to you

If you're over 40 get screened for prostate cancer

The key to successfully treating prostate cancer is to catch it early, which is what happened in my case, and the way I found out about my cancer is nothing short of amazing.
