Updates, Driving, other musings

Since it has been a while since my last blog, there are a few things I'd like to touch on.*First an update: All is still going great as a new homeowner! It only took me 4 months to finally put my pictures up on the wall and it was amazing how it really feels like a home now. I think the hardest part of the home has been filling the other 2 rooms. Making a transition from a 1-bedroom, 800 square foot apartment over to a 3bed/2bath home is a huge upgrade. While I was out growing my little apartment, this is going to take some time to grow into. But having a garage makes me thankful every day! With this ridiculous cold that has been going on, I definitely don't miss sitting outside at 3am in a freezing cold car waiting for it to warm up and the heat to really kick in.
*The holidays were great! Iwent up to Maryland for Christmas where my sister, brother-in-law, and nephew recently purchased their first home. Its a beautiful house in the mountainish area of MD about 40 miles from DC. The best part was being able to spend time with my 2 year old nephew. We played with his Handy Manny tool set where he mimicked every move his Uncada made. Uncada is his 2 year old way of saying Uncle Dar, which my sister calls me. I know I may be biased but he is incredibly smart for a 2 year old. It's amazing how a childs mind really is like a sponge.
*New Years Resolution: My big one is to lose atleast 10 pounds and keep it off all year. I endulged a little too much in my fair share(yours and probably your neighbors too) of dessert during the holiday season. Another resolution I am making is to try and give more during the year, not just during the end of the year.
*If you aren't on Facebook or Twitter or another social networking sites, you may just want to skip this one and the next one. For those folks that are, you may agree with me, you may not. I preface this by saying that I do think these sites are great ways to get and pass information fast, get updated on what is going on in the rest of the world, and also a great way to keep up with friends or reunite with friends from your past. But here is my issue with the world of Status Updates and Tweets. Do I need to follow your every move all day? I'm not talking about the posts referring to your plans for the day, questions you have about things going on, or even when you have a song stuck in your head and you write a few of the lyrics. I do enjoy those and even get a good chuckle out of some of them. Its the constant updates/tweets that tell me what you are doing almost every ten minutes to hour...all day. For example: "I just got dressed", "Starting my car", "watching TV", and so on and so forth. I just wonder what point it serves sometimes.
*For the folks that are on social networking sights... I've always wondered about points of safety with what we update and what we put out there. Giving personal information is always a dangerous situation, but have you ever thought about people that can see what you update or even friends that you are friends with and the information you tell them? For example if you post something like going on a cruise or out of town for the weekend, you just advertised that you aren't going to be at your home. Just a point of caution. I strongly urge you to make sure your security settings are properly set.
*DRIVERS! In the past few months I have made several trips for a day, weekend, etc to different parts of the eastern US. One very disturbing trend I've noticed is that some people still don't understand how to drive in rain and fog. Where to start?
Rain: Speeding is not only extremely dangerous when its dry outside but even moreso when its pouring rain, especially when there is ponding on the road. SLOW DOWN. Take this into consideration...If you travel at an average speed of 60mph, then you average 1 mile per minute. At 70 mph you average 1.1667 miles per minute. Say you travel 30 miles, you will arrive in 30 minutes(60mph average) and in 35 minutes(70mph). My question is this... if traveling at 70mph is not only hazardous to your safety as well as those around you, is it worth the 5 minutes? For your safety, your families safety, and those around you on the road?
Fog: Along with the above about slowing down in the rain, slowing down when its foggy and visibility is reduced is certainly stressed as well. But this is mainly in regards to driving with high beam lights instead of low beams in the fog. No matter how many times it is said that driving with low beams is the safest thing to do, I have noticed countless times where folks are driving with their high beams on. Why is it a bad thing for high beams? Primarily because the high beams will reflect back off of the fog and can not only impare your vision, but even others around you. It almost acts like a mirror, where the low beam lights reflect downward toward the road and the high beams reflect back at you.
Hope you had a great 2009 and an even better 2010! Btw..How are you going to say it? Twenty-Ten? Two Thousand Ten? Just 10? Or 0-10? I like 20-10(like 1999 was Nineteen Ninety Nine)
Ok enough of my rants and musings. Thanks for following along!
