The Grand Strand Miracle League kicked off it's 11th year of baseball for kids with special needs, but to some participants, the league means more than just a game.
Karen Peavey is a sophomore at St. James High School. She also has a learning disability.
Her mother, Susan Peavey, enrolled Karen in the league 10 years ago to help her socialize.
"I knew it'd be wonderful to socialize a child with special needs," said Peavey. "I didn't realize how much it helped the whole family."
Karen says her learning disability doesn't hold her back on the ballfield.
"Most people think these kids can't do anything, but when you see how self sufficient they are and how they seem to have a lot of fun," said Karen.
Organizers say they tally the smiles on the kids' faces rather than scores.
Karen said she enjoys that they don't keep score, because they all win with the experience.
South Atlantic Bank donated $2,600 dollars Thursday night to keep the Miracle League operating.
