Darlington County Schools Superintendent Dr. Rainey Knight has been named the 2013 South Carolina Superintendent of the Year.

The honor came from the South Carolina Association of School Administrators.

According to a release from SCASA, "Knight, a former high school principal, has led Darlington County Schools to be one of the top academic achieving districts in South Carolina despite challenges of an 82% poverty rate and low per student spending. Recognized with the 2nd highest graduation rate in SC and as an Excellent District Rating on the 2011 Report Card (5th highest in the state), Darlington's results show that the strategies she has implemented are successful. She will compete for the 2013 National Superintendent of the Year award sponsored by the American Association of School Administrators (AASA), Aramark, and ING."

Finalists for the award were Dr. Karen Woodward, Lexington District One and Dr. Rose Wilder, Clarendon District One. Candidates participated in an application and interview process.

SCASA also named Richland School District One Assistant to Superintendent/Ombudsman/District Athletic Director Carlos Smith the District Level Administrator of the Year.

Knight and Smith will be recognized throughout the year for their accomplishments. Moseley Architects supports both awards by providing a scholarship to each winner to be used to assist a student or teacher with professional development or college courses.
