Press Release - Construction is underway on Grand Strand Regional Medical Center's $54 million expansion.

The 30 month project will add 50 beds (24 cardiac step-down, 10 surgical step-down, and 16 critical care), expand the Emergency Department (ED) from 28 treatment bays to 40 and create a new cath lab department with a 11-bay pre and post procedure area.

The project consists of 71,650 square feet of new construction, 20,995 square feet of renovation and 4,085 square feet of canopies.

Initial construction this spring focused on civil and utility work on the Bypass 17 side.

Construction of the ED expansion on the west side of the hospital including a new helipad and the cardiac expansion on the south side are now underway.

A major change is the rerouting of EMS traffic to a temporary entrance which will be used throughout 2010. ED parking has been severely limited. During ED expansion, a multipassenger golf cart will assist ED patients and visitors to the ED entrance. Additionally, a security station will continue in the ED parking lot to help patients and visitors find their way around campus.

The ED addition is scheduled for completion in January 2011; renovation of the existing ED will continue throughout 2011.

During ED construction, all staff members and visitors should use the 82nd Parkway entrance. The Bypass entrance is open for construction traffic and emergency department patients.

Construction of the patient tower for consolidated cardiovascular services on the southeast side of the hospital is also underway. Disruption to the campus this summer will be significant as the main road around the hospital will be partially closed.
