One in every 110 children is diagnosed with autism.

One group held a bowling tournament to raise awareness about that number in Horry County. The Autism Avocate Foundation was out Saturday afternoon at Waccamaw Bowling Lanes passing out information about therapies and programs they offer, hoping to "strike out autism."

"The resources that are available to the parents out there are not keeping up with the need. and that's where our organization comes in. There are other great organizations and we work cooperatively with them to try to make sure that parents who need the support and need the services can get them on a day to day basis," Les Hollo, Autism Avocate Foundation Board President said.

Hollo adds there is a huge need for autism families to have support.

Autism is a developmental disorder that affects the brain's normal development of social and communication skills.

"There are some families that see this as a bad thing, it's just a challenge, like any other challenge," Hollo said.
