CHARLESTON, S.C. (WPDE) - The Mayor of Myrtle Beach is in the hospital after an episode with high blood pressure.

Mayor John Rhodes was admitted to Grand Strand Regional Medical Center Thursday afternoon due to high blood pressure, according to to City of Myrtle Beach spokesman Mark Kruea.

Rhodes was then admitted to the Medical University of South Carolina in Charleston Friday evening for additional tests.

Saturday morning Rhodes underwent an angioplasty to remove a blood clot from his brain.

The surgery was successful and Rhodes plans to return to Myrtle Beach early next week following a full recovery, adds Kruea.

Rhodes was elected Mayor in 2005 and re-elected in 2009.

Rhodes missed Thursday and Friday evening of the Beach Ball Classic, a basketball tournament he's helped organize for many years.
