COLUMBIA, S.C. (AP) -- An annual report has again ranked South Carolina better than only five other states for the overall well-being of its children.

South Carolina's ability for children to succeed ranks 45th in the nation in the Kids Count report released Tuesday by the Annie E. Casey Foundation.

That's ahead of only five states - New Mexico, Alabama, Arkansas, Louisiana and Mississippi.

The report says South Carolina's rates for infant mortality and teen birth have improved. But indicators slipped for percentages of low birth-weight babies, children in poverty and children living in single parent families.

Children's Trust of South Carolina chief executive Sue Williams says the state needs to focus on a more holistic approach to improving children's lives.
