News Release - With over 400 acres of scenic woodlands, creeks and lakes, young campers from the 1890 Extension Marlboro Cluster will enjoy fun, friends and healthy adventures at a new summer camp, presented in partnership by the 1890 Research & Extension Program at SC State University and Clemson University's Youth Learning Institute.
Youth, who reside in the Marlboro Cluster service counties of Darlington, Dillon, Florence, Marlboro and Marion, will gain an unforgettable camp experience at the 2010 Summer Residential Camp, to be held at the historic Camp Long (82 Camp Long Road, Aiken, S.C.). The cluster is offering one, one-week session from June 20-25. The camp is open to youth ages 8-12.
While the camp offers traditional experiences like swimming, canoeing, challenging ropes courses, and hiking, campers will engage in fun and educational activities that will expose them to new areas of interest. Centered on financial education, the residential camp will introduce participants to financial basics such as saving, budgeting and investing money, using credit wisely and keeping your money safe. Campers will also learn what it takes to own and operate a business.
Additional lessons will focus on science, mathematics and reading, and youth will learn the importance of adopting healthy lifestyle practices. There is even a leadership and character development component designed to develop youth as responsible citizens.
To register for the 2010 Summer Residential Camp, interested participants must complete and submit the application forms and a $50 registration fee. The fee includes meals, lodging, transportation, activities, recreational equipment and supplies.
Application packets will be available for pick-up on April 30 from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. at the 1890 Extension Marlboro Cluster office (213 E. Market Street, Bennettsville, S.C.). On that date, interested participants will be required to complete and return the Camper Information form and pay a $25 non-refundable deposit.
All other forms need to be returned May 14, along with the $25 final balance, to the 1890 Extension Marlboro Cluster office from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Payments of cashier's check or money order, made payable to SC State University, will only be accepted.
