Work on the chapter's new Emergency Operations Center started Monday and is being funded by a $308,000 grant from the Myrtle Beach Air Force Base Redevelopment Authority.
The facility will be constructed of reinforced concrete block with brick veneer, no windows and metal studs in the roof frame to withstand winds of a category 4 hurricane (131-155 mph). This would provide a higher level of security and would enhance the ability of Red Cross staff and volunteers to continue operations on site during and after a major disaster affecting any location of its service area of Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties.
Hay Construction was awarded the low bid on the project and expects to complete construction by early April depending on the weather.
An official groundbreaking will be held in early January, according to Red Cross CEO Angela Nicholas.
