The Coastal Chapter of the American Red Cross has had to reach out to help five different families displaced by fires in the past four days.
The chapter's Disaster Action Team members and staff responded to the fires that left a total of 12 adults and 7 children without homes to live in.
The Red Cross says it responded to assist with the immediate emergency needs of the families providing more than $2,000 in financial assistance. Already this fiscal year, the Coastal Chapter says it's assisted 56 families consisting of 177 people who have been victims of home fires. Of those, 71 were children.
The Coastal Chapter serves clients in Horry, Georgetown and Williamsburg counties.
The Red Cross provides for the immediate emergency needs of disaster victims, which includes lodging, meals and clothing. In addition, the Red Cross can provide mental health crisis counseling to those in need, as well as assistance in developing a recovery plan to get the family back to pre-disaster conditions as quickly as possible.
