(AP) -- About 200 Horry and Georgetown elementary and middle school students spent the day at Brookgreen Gardens as part of a mentoring program with Coastal Carolina University.
The annual event is part of the Dalton and Linda Floyd Family Mentoring Program, a program aimed at pairing university students with children in public schools to improve graduations rates.
At Brookgreen, the students were educated about the history of the lowcountry, including the Gullah culture. Gullah is the sea island culture of slave descendents in the lowcountry area.
