Going into Smucker’s Stars on Ice I wasn’t completely sure what to expect. Sure I have watched skating during the Olympic Games, but I’d never witnessed it live. I’d also never laced up a pair of skates myself since the coordinationaly challenged generally should avoid being on slick surfaces. So would it be something I would enjoy or something that I’d just check off as an experience?

Walking into the arena at the Palace of Auburn Hills the first thing that I noticed what is was warmer then I had expected. Seeing as we were seated around a rink of solid ice I expected it to be freezing and instead it was quite comfortable. The next thing I noticed was the range and variety of people in the audience. From the older women dressed to the nines to the young girl in the pink ice-princess dress seated in the row in front of us and even the men of varying ages, it was obvious that the show appealed to many audiences.

One by one the performances came to life on the ice. After seeing them live I can solidly say they are highly skilled athletes. As someone who would probably break my neck by just stepping onto the ice, I was amazed at how effortless they made it look. It wasn’t just skating, it was art.

The crowd was entertained by perfectly choreographed group numbers that presented some of the world’s best skaters working in unison. Along with solo and pairs performances that ranged from emotional and moving to fun and jubilant. From Todd Eldrege’s lightning fast spins to Michael Weiss’ dare devil back flips that defied gravity I was in awe. Meryl Davis and Charlie White presented a sultry Bollywood inspired act. Sasha Cohen was a delight to watch as her overly flexible limbs aided her in an amazing graceful performance. And, Yuka Sato is just a firecracker. She’s so tiny and yet is a powerhouse of energy that came across in her solo number. Then, enter Ben Agosto and Tanith Belbin with their adorably cheeky boy meets girl act that includes Agosto spinning Belbin off the ice with both holding onto no more then a backpack to connect them. Every performance brought something new to the show, including Ben Agosto’s guitar solo while skating, how is it fair that one person should have so much talent?! But, the one thing that stood out among all of the acts was that they were having fun and drawing the audience into their love of performing.

Listening to the soft his of the blades cutting into the ice, watching skaters defy the laws of gravity, I have to admit, I enjoyed the show. Yes it is an experience that I can check off, but it’s also one that I’d love to have again. I’d highly recommend checking out Stars on Ice.

On a side note, while preparing to see the show I checked out the Stars on Ice website and found some behind the scenes footage that I’d encourage you to take a look at. The stars take you out onto the ice to experience some of their trademark moves. Follow this link and click on Skater Cam.
