As the light grew behind the curtain, it revealed the familiar silhouette of a conductor with his orchestra. However, this shadowy figure behind the current held a powerful voice that fans packed the arena to near capacity to witness.
Michael Bublé, known as the modern day crooner, was confused at the Michigan stop of his “Crazy Love” tour. When greeting his fans at the Palace of Auburn Hills he explained that he was told he was ‘in Detroit’, but he wasn’t really ‘in Detroit’, he was 30 miles north of Detroit, but laughed and just gave in saying “But, hello Detroit!”. This comedic introduction was just the beginning of an evening of fun entertainment.
With his trademark quirky little boy smile and a mischievous sparkle in his eyes, Bublé belted out songs that moved the crowd to cheers, screams and professions of love. Poised on his stool in the curve of a sleek baby grand, with a halo of light around him, Bublé crooned “The Best of Me” and every romantic in the audience swooned.
While some artists rely on lip-synching and vocal backing tracks to duplicate their recorded songs quality, Bublé not only did not require either but sounded better, clearer and more powerful in person then any recording could ever do. He’s an artist that you can not truly appreciate until you’ve heard him live. How a 34 year old can contain so much soul is beyond me.
The music seemed to take over every fluid step, movement and dance. It wasn’t so much that he moved to the music, more like the music moved him. Even when seated he could not sit still, a foot, a leg, an arm, or simply all of him moved to beat or swayed with the song.
Through out the show Bublé maintained a constant dialog with the audience. Some fans brought signs to convey their thoughts and words to the young performer. Including one woman who’s sign read “I’ve been to 3 Bublé concerts, please take a picture with me” and he did just that. He invited her up to the stage and posed with the dedicated fan. Bublé also made it a point to converse with the some children in the front few rows; even joined in when 2 excited little girls started jumping around and squealing.
Coming off of the 2010 Olympics in his home of Vancouver, Bublé had some fun with the notoriously passionate Michigan hockey fans. By taking a quick jab at the Red Wingers in the crowd and rubbing salt in the still sore wounds from the final game for the gold. However those hockey fans were quickly distracted from thoughts of gold not only by Bublé’s amazing performance, but by the presence of a Mr. Hockey himself Gordie Howe who was at the show with his family in celebration of his 82nd birthday. Bublé, who was quite obviously honored to be able to entertain the legendary player, lead the crowd in singing happy birthday, then dedicated “Georgia” to the Howe family.
Never in my life have I seen someone who was born to entertain like Bublé. He’s not performing a concert when he’s on stage; instead he’s hosting a party for a few thousand of his dearest friends. While he admitted that his fans would prefer a smaller venue then the large arenas he’s performing in on his “Crazy Love” tour, he promised to try to make it seem as intimate as possible. Mr. Bublé, you succeeded. To the sound of smooth music, the Palace of Auburn hills felt more like a small jazz club and we were all seated at the best seat in the house.
He shared so much of himself with the audience, not only the music, but his personal inspirations and childhood dreams. And sorry ladies, he also shared that his heart has been claimed. He is quite obviously smitten with his lady love and proudly showed the ring on his left hand and explained that in his fiancés culture both the man and woman wear engagement rings “Or so she tells me” he teased.
As the night came to end Bublé told the crowd “I’ll come back a million times if you’ll have me.” Mr. Bublé let me speak for your fans in Michigan, USA, Canada and all across the world. Please come back a million time and more.
