CHARLESTON, S.C. (AP) - A woman has won a $1.75 million judgment after alleging an inconsiderate phone call threatening eviction killed her mother.
The Post and Courier reports Saturday that a judge ordered Omega Nesbit's now-defunct property manager, Dean-Kelby Realty, to pay. Since the company has dissolved, it's unknown whether she'll receive any money.
Nesbit says her 62-year-old mother suffered a heart attack and died after taking the September 2006 phone call. Nesbit was behind on rent at the West Ashley home after complaining of unfixed maintenance issues.
Nesbit's lawsuit also alleged breach of tenant law.
Homeowner John Burg took no responsibility for the company's actions but says in court documents Nesbit should have known failing to pay rent might result in eviction and leaving a phone with her mother could cause distress.
