Nearly $6 million are heading to South Carolina technical colleges.

The state's technical college system, including Horry-Georgetown Tech and Florence-Darlington Tech in our area, is set to receive $5.9 in Recovery Act grants to expand broadband internet access.

Tech schools will be afforded the opportunity to purchase more than 2,000 new computers and to create 19 new computer labs at the 16 tech schools in the Palmetto State.

The project is also expected to open community college computer centers to the general public.

The expanded capacity will accommodate an increase in users per week from 17,000 to 38,000.
