Pee Dee Tobacco Barns: Photography
Pee Dee Tobacco Barns: Photography by Benton HenryThroughout the months of April and May, the Horry County Museum will be hosting photography exhibit by local photographer Benton Henry. Henry’s Tobacco Barn photography captures “A moment in Time” focusing on wood tobacco barns mostly in despair and dilapidated. Henry’s photos record an essence of local history that is quickly fading away as time, weather and development wear at these old icons.Benton Henry’s work has been featured in over 200 books and magazines including Pee Dee Magazine and the Greater Pee Dee Business Journal. Most of his work is used by local ad agencies.Interpretive text for the photographic collection was written by Dr. Eldred E. Prince, Jr. Dr. Prince, a local from Loris, SC, is currently the Director of the Waccamaw Center for Cultural and Historical Studies at Coastal Carolina University. He is also a widely published historian. His most notable work, Long Green: The Rise and Fall of Tobacco in South Carolina, has served as the main source of information for the interpretive text accompanying this exhibition. This project was sponsored by The Humanities Council of South Carolina, Abingdon Manor of Latta, Jim Boden, City of Darlington, The Coker College History Department, Curt Cottle Associates, Latta revitalization Commission, The National Bean Market Museum, South Carolina Department of Parks, Recreation & Tourism, and the Black Creek Arts Council. The Horry County Museum is located at 438 Main Street, corner of 5th and Main, in downtown Historic Conway, SC.For further information, please call the Horry County Museum at 843-915-5320 or e-mail at hcmuseum@horrycounty.org.
